Power of Attorney in British Columbia

Power of Attorney

A Power of Attorney  (POA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint selected individuals to make decisions on your behalf. These decisions are for your financial needs. A Power of Attorney can be limited to a certain matter to assist with assets, properties and many more things.  The Power of Attorney can be used in your absence or if you are unable to make decisions for yourself.

In British Columbia, a POA is most often used to help manage banking, property, taxes, bill payments, and asset transactions. You can choose to make your POA very broad, covering all financial matters, or limit it to specific tasks or time periods—such as selling a property while you’re out of the country.

A Power of Attorney can only be used while you are alive (capable or incapable as you designed), on and after your death the POA cannot be used.  It’s also worth noting that a POA does not grant authority over personal or medical decisions instead those are covered by a Representation Agreement in BC.

A Power of Attorney can also be revoked if you decide that you no longer want the selected individual to make decisions for you.
